Duties & Responsibilities
The Investigations Division of the Olympia Fields Police Department is responsible for continuing the investigations that begin with the Patrol Officer taking an incident report. Every case is assigned an Investigator. Detective Corporal Akiyama is in charge of overseeing all of the investigations village-wide. He is responsible for taking an incident report, verifying that all of the information contained within the report is true and accurate, seeking evidence and/or witnesses, and then interviewing the victims, witnesses, and suspects. When the suspect is eventually charged, Detective Corporal Akiyama then follows the case through the Cook County Criminal Court System until the suspect has either been convicted or acquitted.
Recently, Detective Corporal Akiyama along with Detective Kickert received awards for a case involving a suspect who fled the scene of a fatal accident who was charged, convicted, and sentenced to 19 years in prison, as a result of the investigation that Detective Corporal Akiyama led.
The Olympia Fields Police Department works hand in hand with several Federal, State, and Local agencies. Corporals Lopez and Mayden are assigned to the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force along with Detectives Akiyama and Kickert, where they assist agencies in south suburban Cook County investigate homicides and other major crimes that occur in the area. Participation in task force settings like this allow all of the investigators at the Olympia Fields Police Department to keep their skills finely honed.
